I wouldn’t classify this as the ‘most beautiful,’ but for me, one of the most memorable places was the Giardino degli Aranci park in Rome. Walking through the park and taking in the vista over Rome and Vatican City, smelling orange blossoms in full bloom — that was over 20 years ago, and the memory of that day is still vivid.
My picks are more for form versus function. There is something about seeing a narrow-body DC-8 with four Pratt & Whitney engines that I find to be a beautiful sight. Before that, the Lockheed Constellation (Connie) is another design marvel.
I have hung a plaque in my offices throughout my career with a quote from Teddy Roosevelt that has provided me with guidance: “Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to rank with those who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the gray twilight that knows neither victory nor defeat.”
