ARC Reports Air Ticket Sales by US Travel Agencies Increase in April vs. 2016

Average US Roundtrip Ticket Price Rose $3 Last Month Compared to March

ARLINGTON, Va. – May 17, 2017 – Airlines Reporting Corp. (ARC), the premier driver of air travel intelligence and commerce in the travel industry, reported today that the average U.S. roundtrip ticket price* for April 2017 was $501, up from $498 in March. Average ticket prices are up approximately $20 from April 2016.

The consolidated dollar value of airline tickets sold by U.S.-based travel agencies increased 1.3 percent in April as compared to 2016, totaling $7.8 billion vs. $7.7. The number of passenger trips* settled by ARC for U.S. travel agencies decreased only 0.5 percent to 22,997,000 compared to nearly 23,107,000 in April 2016.

Electronic Miscellaneous Document (EMD)** sales comprised nearly $7.9 million, a 150 percent increase over 2016. EMD transactions increased 317 percent to nearly 139,350 in April 2017 vs. nearly 41,400 in 2016.

  • Results are based on monthly sales data ending April 30, 2017, from 12,288 U.S. retail and corporate travel agency locations, satellite ticket printing offices and online travel agencies.
  • Results do not include sales of tickets purchased directly from airlines.
    • Average ticket price (in USD) for a roundtrip ticket settled through ARC for an itinerary that included only U.S. domestic travel.
    • Passenger trips include the total number of passengers taking a trip from one airport to another using either direct or connecting flights. Newly issued trips are added and refunded trips are deducted to provide a net view of traveling passengers. Only transactions for travel are included (no MCOs, EMDs, etc.).
    • Total sales are equal to the total amount paid for a ticket, which includes taxes and fees.

  • Includes fees for products and services such as upgraded seats, checked luggage, an unaccompanied minor, pet-in-cabin, etc.
