To celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, ARC employees share their diverse backgrounds and reflect on why this month is meaningful to them. Here’s what they had to say:
Jason Mejias, Product Marketing Manager
My family is from Puerto Rico, and I grew up in Connecticut, where in the late '90s, we ran one of the largest Hispanic travel agencies in the state. My Hispanic heritage has deeply shaped my values and I would encourage every Hispanic professional to take pride in their roots. Don’t hide or dilute who you are. Instead, find ways to bring the passion of our culture into your workplace.
Alex Melo, Security Operations Engineer
I was born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, and moved to the U.S. more than a decade ago. My cultural and family heritage drives me to always strive for excellence and get things done. It also helps me adapt to new situations with a resourceful mindset. Coming from a place with limited resources, I've learned to solve problems by making the most of what's available.
I encourage everyone to embrace their cultural differences and turn them into an asset. Learn to market yourself, be memorable, and spark curiosity in others.
Stephen Rodas, Talent Acquisition Specialist
My father’s family is from Quetzaltenango, Guatemala, and they immigrated to the U.S. shortly after he was born. My Hispanic heritage has always instilled in me a drive to excel. Being part of a community known for its hard work, I strive to do my best in everything I do.
Along with that work ethic, I’ve inherited a deep sense of family. Family traditions are a cherished part of Hispanic culture—like celebrating Christmas Eve by opening gifts at midnight—and I look forward to creating my own traditions with my family. Unfortunately, it doesn’t take much to see the immense scrutiny, prejudice, and outright discrimination Hispanics have endured for decades. That’s why I’m especially proud that there is a month dedicated to honoring and uplifting the Hispanic community, no matter their country of origin.
This month gives me hope that one day, the racism we face will be a thing of the past.
